About

Understanding participation and attainment in STEM education.

What is SEEdash?

"SEEdash" is short for "Science and Engineering in Education Dashboard". It aims to help educators, policymakers and others to better understand the state of STEM education in England. While the focus is on STEM qualifications, it includes information on other qualifications and non-STEM subjects studied by students between the ages of 14 and 18.

SEEdash does not currently cover higher education, or parts of the United Kingdom outside England. This is in part because the underlying data are less readily available.

Who created it?

SEEdash is a collaboration between the Institute of Physics, the Royal Academy of Engineering and the Gatsby Foundation, supported by SchoolDash.

Where does the information come from?

SEEdash data are produced from the National Pupil Database (NPD). The NPD is an administrative record of educational information for school-age students in England. The raw data, which are released annually by the Department for Education (DfE), are made available to approved researchers who are then able, subject to DfE rules, to publish their findings. We have ensured the privacy of all individuals whose data have been included in the SEEdash aggregates through the suppression of statistics relating to small group sizes, as stipulated by the DfE. The security of the raw NPD data is ensured at all times as SEEdash only contains pre-calculated aggregates that were calculated in secure conditions.

Can I reuse the data, images and charts?

Yes. We have tried to make this as easy as possible by providing an image download feature and code that you can embed in your own web pages. You can make use of these for any purpose as long as you retain the "www.SEEdash.org" attribution. If you mention us online, we would also appreciate a link.

What technologies does it use?

This site uses standard web technologies such as HTML5, SVG and JavaScript. It should work well in any up-to-date browser, but some of the more data-rich pages may prove slow or difficult to use on computers with low amounts of memory, slow processors or small screens.

It makes use of Bootstrap, D3.js, NVD3 and spin.js, among other open-source software libraries. We thank the creators for their hard work and generosity.

What's the legal fine print?
